(Reuters) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday expanded the use of Lynparza, sold by AstraZeneca Plc and Merck & Co Inc, to include ongoing treatment of patients with recurrent ovarian cancer who have responded to platinum-based chemotherapy. Pitavastatin, part of aclass of statins widely used to lower blood cholesterol levels, was found to successfully target ovarian cancer cells and reduce tumor growth in mice, according to a recent report published in the journal Scientific Reports. But the study,Dietary geranylgeraniol can limit the activity of pitavastatin as a potential treatment for drug-resistant ovarian cancer, suggests that certain dietary compounds, like geranylgeraniol that isfoundin sunflower oil and some rice, may halt the anti-tumor potentialof this statin. A pair of UC Riverside researchers say they have found a mechanism for blocking the spread of ovarian cancer, one of the deadliest cancers for women. Recent University of Notre Dame transplants Mark Alber and Oleg Kim, along with a team of researchers, published a study in Oncology Times in July that detailed how they used a monoclonal antibody named GC-4 to block a protein responsible for allowing ovarian cancer cells to latch onto and penetrate other cells.
